Some excerpts from the diary:
Sunday 21 June At Chirk Green Chapel preaching from the words ‘she hath done what she could’ Mark, 14, 8.
Monday 3 February Left Chirk to go to work at Wrexham on this date. Went to see the underlooker on the bank – told me he had a good place.
Sunday 11 February At home all day. Snow very deep in the Farmyard Lane. The snow was at its highest on this date. The biggest snow for 7 years.
Tuesday 27 February Began on our new place on this date. General Cronje taken prisoner and all his men. Great jubilation in England today over the victory of Lord Roberts.
Thursday 1st March The relief of Ladysmith. Lord Dundonald entered last night…. the number of prisoners taken was over 4000 men besides women and children. The siege of Ladysmith lasted 188 days.
Wednesday 14 March At Wrexham for cake and pork pie and eggs. Walked there and back in tram to Rhostyllen. (Henry was working at Bersham colliery near Rhostyllen, Wrexham at the time)
Saturday 31 March At Wrexham with my wife for (?house) money. Bought Ira shoes and glass shades.
Monday 16 April Ira (youngest son) very ill. I was at home all day with him. At doctor’s at night.
Tuesday 8 May Sent for 3 suits of clothes from Crew for myself and Tom Stokes Mr Wilson and ? for Mr James. £5.1.6
Tuesday 29 May John Stokes (father-in-law) died on this date at 4 o’clock, Tuesday May 29 1900
Monday 16 July At home on this date. Went for a walk on the mountains. had a prayer on the top as God was present with me. Carried through Craignant and Selattyn. On to Oswestry. Feeling that I have had a good day’s walk.
Saturday 21 July At work on this date. A man taken ill at pit. Carried out on stretcher.
Wednesday 25 July At work on this date. At committee meeting at night. George Roberts taken to prison for stealing drill machines.
Sunday 19 August At prayer meeting in morning. School sermons on this date by Mr J Jobling of Bradford, morning and night. Afternoon service of song. More than ? Collected £14.11.3½
Thursday 23 August Polly and Eva gone to Shrewsbury Show – final day.
Tuesday 4 September & Wednesday 5 September At work on this date. A bad day at work. At committee meeting at 4 o’clock about Bake House (local CWS) First estimate was £185. We wanted it done for one hundred … settled to build a bake house for £115.
Monday 24 May Went to Wrexham and Coedpoeth to bury Uncle Robert Ellis. A very cold night. William (son) bought a bicycle for £4.15s. (This was a very significant entry. It confirmed my research on Henry’s mother’s line which had been very difficult to trace)
Monday 1 October Dr Lloyd called today to see Ira. Found him better…had a new book…Joseph Roberts (his son) married on this date at Oswestry to Edith Mates, Chirk.
Tuesday 9 October Aunt Jane died Sunday night – half past eleven o’clock. (I am still trying to find out who Aunt Jane is)
Monday 15 October At work on this date. At committee meeting at stores (CWS). No credit to be given after this week by order of committee.
Thursday 18 October Joe’s wife confined with a son on this date (his first grandson). Lord Hill Trevor’s coachman broke his leg – fell off horse.
Thursday 8 November At the stores (CWS) in bake house getting ashes out of it.
Thursday 16 November Off work on this date. At home - ill- pain in side.
Thursday 22 November Had my clothes from Crewe. Coat too little. Return the same.
Monday 10 December Sent £5.14.0 for 4 suits of clothes from Crewe. At Band of Hope – chairman and committee of stores (CWS).
Tuesday 25 December At home all day. At Chapel in morning – Chirk Green. At Quinta (St Martins Parish) school concert at night. A good one.
